Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895, in Massachusetts. He invented the game because he wanted a game that could be played indoors, was as challenging as basketball, but not as rough as soccer.

There are six players on a team. Players rotate clockwise.

A game is (A) 15 points with a two point lead. If a team does not have a two point lead, then the games continues until one team gets a two point lead. Or (B) A time limit of actual playing time.

Only the serving team can make a point. When saying the score, you say the serving team’s score first. A point is made when the receiving does not return the ball or commits a foul. If the serving team does not return the ball or commits a foul, sideout is called, the receiving team rotates, and becomes the serving team.  You may use an overhand or underhand serve.

A player may hit the ball twice but not in a row (a player may have the first and third hits). A ball may be hit a total of three times by a team (the third hit must go over the net). If two or more players from the same team hit the ball at the same time, it is considered one hit and anyone including those involved may have the next hit. If two or more players from different teams hit the ball at the same time, any of the players may participate in the next play which is considered the first of three hits allowed to the team.

A ball touching the boundary lines is in and good.

If players from different teams commit a foul at the same time, it is called a double foul and the play is replayed.

A ball, except on a serve, touching the net and going over is legal and still in play. If a ball hits the net on the serve, it is no good and sideout is called.

A player can not touch the net or step over the center line during the play. The player may step on the center line.

A server may not step on or over the serving line until after she hits the ball. She should then move to her right back position.

Volleyball is a set-up game. The three important controlled hits are: the bump(forearm bounce pass) used to take the force off the ball and put it into your front row, the set used to put the ball high and close to the net to  your right or left front, and the spike used to put it down on the other side of the net so it is hard to return. When receiving the serve, a hard hit, or the ball below your face, the bump should be used.

When serving, an open hand will give you more accuracy and placement. A closed fist will give you more power but less accuracy.

When studying this information, you should also be able to tell why you play this game (values) and what your body is doing when you use the bump, set, and spike.
