Since our inaugural year in 1994 we've had many different astronauts and other people come as guest speakers. We have pride in our school and would like to thank all the guest speakers who have visited us. Following, you will find more information about our visitors. Capt.
James A. Lovell, Jr., USN (Retired) Capt. Lovell came to La Joya Middle School to participate in the dedication of the James Lovell Center, a multi-purpose building on the campus. Chosen with the second group of astronauts in 1962. Was backup pilot for Gemini 4, pilot of Gemini 7, backup command pilot for Gemini 9, command pilot for Gemini 12, command module pilot of Apollo 8, backup commander for Apollo 11, and commander of Apollo 13. Became Deputy Director of Science and Applications at the Johnson Space Center in May 1971. Lef t NASA and the Navy in March 1973 to become President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bay-Houston Towing Company, but resigned that position on January 1,1977, to become President of Fisk Telephone Systems in Houston. On January 1, 1981, he became Group Vice President of Centel Corporation, and was later promoted to Executive Vice President. Currently, President, Lovell Communications, Lake Forest, Illinois. Sally K. Ride Personal: Born: May 26, 1951 (Los Angeles, California) On June 18, 1983, Sally K. Ride became the first woman in space as part of the crew of the Shuttle mission STS-7. The craft was the "Challenger", named after a 19th century British warship. She earned a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in English from Stanford University in 1973. Using her physics background and first-hand space experience, Ride is now a lecturer at the University of California at San Diego, and head of the university's Space Science Institute. Mark Lee SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) - He helped send NASA's Magellan spacecraft to Venus, took the first untethered spacewalk in 10 years and spent a decade designing tools for the Hubble Space Telescope. He gets to try them out Thursday night as chief Hubble mechanic. Lee tested a jet pack in orbit, becoming one of the few men ever to fly untethered in space. Cal Dooley Congressman Calvin Dooley served four terms as a member of Congress, representing the 20th District of California. Dooley is a fourth-generation San Joaquin Valley farmer and partner in Dooley Farms of the Hanford-Visalia area. He served on the House of Representatives' committees on Agriculture and Resources, and served as ranking minority member on the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Forestry, Resource Conservation and Research. Dooley was born on January 11, 1954 in Visalia. He and his wife, Linda (Phillips), have two daughters, Brooke and Emily Dr. Cheick M. Diarra
Dr. Diarra has visited La Joya on numerous occasions. His work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) includes heading the Mars Pathfinder Project. He is an inspirational scientist!
