Charter
Alternatives Academy serves grades 7 through 12 students that have been
expelled from Visalia Unified School District. As a Charter School,
the academic program is designed to make a meaningful,
creative, and flexible curriculum. The program at
Charter Alternatives
Academy, was developed to
ensure that students feel safe, yet are challenged academically and
meet their terms and conditions of expulsion.
Being located at the former Union School in Visalia, California,
all of our students are bused to and from school. Upon arriving at
school, students are "screened" as they depart the bus. The
screening involves a visual search and collection of electronics
devices not allowed on the campus for security reasons. Students then proceed to classes.
The typical day for
Charter
Alternatives
students has them attending a 6 period day. Students have two 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute
lunch. All students participate in a social skills program of anger
management, or social skill improvement. Additionally, our school
offers a leadership program with a cadet training component.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Charter Cadet
Opportunity Program. The academic day ends at 2:40 with the
departure of the buses.
Students at
Charter Alternatives are either
referred by our supporting school district (Visalia
Unified School District) for various reasons, or request
placement at this site. Before students begin our program, they are
pre-assessed in Reading, Math, and the Multiple Intelligences -
assessments to gauge improvement are given on a quarterly basis.
Charter Alternatives
then develops an
Individual
Learning Plan for each student.
